DISCOVER THE ESTUARY BY DONKEY

A donkey is an ideal companion for helping you discover the local countryside and the joys of trekking – and, of course, for introducing children to these activities. Trek by yourself, or accompanied, for half-a-day (6 hrs) with itinerary provided – one donkey for four people.

HIKING AND MOUNTAIN BIKING

We suggest one particular hiking trail that will allow you to explore the natural beauty of the area, experience the serenity of the estuary, and appreciate its architectural heritage. The Cliff Walk – 10 km (2 hrs 30 min)

The Tourist Office suggests four  ideas for routes that will allow you to discover Mortagne-sur-Gironde and the surrounding area with the help of a town map (These for itineraries are not not waymarked).

  • The Estuary Footpath – a magnificent walk of 1.5km (there and back) that will take you through the heart of the marshes to the belvedere at the edge of the estuary.
  • The Pedestrian Footpath – which runs along the dyke to Port Maubert (12km there and back).

There are also two guides to rambles in the Pays Royannais available at the Tourist Office:

  • Le guide de promenades et randonnées (Walks and Rambles Guide) – 24 circuits – 8 € WALKS

Ideas for cycle rides are suggested on the  CARA site : cycle rides

The path of the birds : Amidst tranquil scenerycycle the paths that crisscross the marshes to see the many species of birds that live there.

You can download the guidebooks to help you identify the various species of birds at: http://www.estuaire-gironde.fr/a-velo.html  This project was developed by the Joint Association for Sustainable Development of the Gironde Estuary (SMIDDEST – Syndicat Mixte pour le Développement Durable de l’Estuaire de la Gironde). This is part of a development involving an innovative partnership with the departmental hunting federations of the Gironde and the Charente-Maritime, the Aquitaine League for the Protection Birds, and the Natural Park of the Landes of Gascony.

AROUND THE HISTORIC PORT

A leisurely walk around the yacht basin and the area surrounding it is to be recommended. Its location beneath the cliffs at the end of the navigable channel leading out to the estuary is steeped in history – as evidenced by the buildings surrounding it, including the former flour mill (see Postcard Museum for photographs of the port in the 20th Century and earlier).

L’Atelier Brocante de la Minoterie at 28 bis quai de l’estuaire hosts a group of antique dealers in this splendidly restored former fourmill. Free entry www.atelierbrocantedelaminoterie.com
